MURDER IN THE NAME OF RELIGION is not new to the worlds of reality and literature. Crimes against humanity are justified in the name of a righteous and vengeful god. In Land of the Saints, Jeff Wells comes face to face with a palpable evil, which finds its genesis in one of the western world's newest and fastest growing religions.
Jeff Wells, known to his contemporaries as Jeff, "go fuck yourself' Wells journeys from a mid-life crisis and life changing epiphany to the biggest challenge of his fifty plus years. The founding partner of a powerful Los Angeles law firm, Jeff has become jaded about his professional and his personal life just as fate intervenes.
A voice from a happier past summons him to the high mountain town of St. Johns Arizona to help an old friend facing multiple murder charges. "Big Jim" Higgins, the owner of the Wolf Creek Lodge, a hunting and dude ranch, is accused of killing three men he suspected were rustling his horses.
Jeff discovers that the slain men found near the sacred Native American site, the Great Kiva at Casa Malpais, were not rustlers but enforcers of a shadowy arm of the Mormon Church. Big Jim and his wife Karen turn over an hundred year old family journal which reveals the chilling history of a church founded less than two hundred years ago and comprising 14,000,000 members in America and the Western Hemisphere.
Jeff learns that the most sacred treasure of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, the Golden Plates, were not what the Prophet, Joseph Smith, had professed but the product of another time and culture. A secret paramilitary fraternity, the Danites, whose members take an oath of blood atonement and ritual killing of all covenant-breaking Mormons, is prepared to do anything to prevent the discovery and publication of the plates. Church scripture proclaims that the plates were given to Joseph Smith by the warrior angel Moroni and that Smith used those plates to transcribe portions of the Book of Mormon, before returning the Golden Plates to the angel.
Saints journeys into historical events seldom discussed or revealed in your father's history lessons. The chilling conclusion will leave you on the edge of your seat.
